St. Sophia Cathedral (1037) is a remarkable example of architectural and monumental art in the Kievan Rus. It was constructed and decorated when the Kievan Rus was at its economic and cultural zenith. The coronation of princes was conducted in St. Sophia Cathedral. Their tombs are here, as well. Other official and religious ceremonies were conducted here. The first library and the first school for boys and girls in the Kievan Rus was founded by Prince Yaroslav the wise. The cathedral was the main residence of the Kievan Metropolitan. The cathedral’s interior has been preserved through 11 centuries and has not undergone any substantial changes. The mosaics and frescoes from the 11th Century are especially valuable. They were created with unique technology and portray biblical scenes, protraits of the church fathers, apostles, soldiers.

One of the world’s largest open-air museums. Here you can see wooden and modern constructions that reflect the daily lives of various regions of Ukraine. Over 40, 000 exhibits are on display: Ukrainian national dress, cloth, ceramic and wooden household items, domestic utensils and instruments from the 16th century up until today. |
